Grounded continues its tour of Queensland with Flying Arts Alliance, now open at Tableland Regional Gallery, 16 Robert Street, Atherton until 4 March.

The Grounded exhibition, a commission by Glasgow Life for Festival 2014 Commonwealth Games, has also shown since at An Lanntair Art Gallery in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, as a partner event at Hebtember Festival and at The Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts in Brisbane, before beginning its two-and-a -half year tour of Queensland with Flying Arts Alliance.

In brief, Grounded is the creative outcome from two residencies: one in the Gaelic speaking Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and one with Australian Aboriginal Nations of the central deserts. The story of my night in jail in Alice Springs whilst on artist residency for Grounded, the subsequent lack of conviction in court, and implications of this story for the local Aboriginal population, can be linked to here. Fuaigh performance at the Edinburgh Fringe – first show sold out

Sold out – our first performance of Fuaigh at the Edinburgh Fringe. Only one more performance and tickets are selling fast – Monday 21st, 3pm at The Scottish Storytelling Centre. Written and performed by Rona MacDonald, music by Mod Gold Medalist and Outlander star Gillebride MacMillan, visual projections by Judith Parrott and directed by John Binnie. Using song, story, projected imagery and dance, Fuaigh starts at a ceilidh on the Hebridean island of South Uist, leaves for the big city of Glasgow and comes back again. Performed in Gaelic and English, and celebrating the spirit of belonging.

You can link to The List theatre editor’s, page at this link where Rona answers some questions about the writing of Fuaigh. Originally commissioned as part of Home Away, the National Theatre of Scotland’s international festival of participatory arts.

“Fuaigh is a truly excellent show. Rona, Judith, John and Gillebride should be extremely proud of what is in my view a masterpiece. I would give it at least seven stars. The singing was really lovely and the stories and images warm and beautiful, but the warmth that shone brightly through the entire event, the brilliant mixing of singers with an obviously enthusiastic and captured audience during the dancing really made Fuaigh what I guess it actually means. We really did feel as though we were from South Uist ourselves! You made a big impression on us all which I am sure will live in our memories. Outstanding!”  Tom Chadwick , Chairman, Enterprise Music Scotland.

Fuaigh at Tramway, Glasgow

Fuaigh was shown by National Theatre Scotland as part of its Home Away Festival, alongside a week of performances from Chicago, New Delhi, Brisbane, Dundee, Tomintoul and Glenlivet, Glasgow, Jamaica, the World Wide Web and Rio de Janeiro.

“Fuaigh centres around a traditional Gaelic Ceilidh. Using evocative song and dance, combined with striking visuals and a compelling narrative, the show will explore what happens when you leave behind your homeland and sail away to the metropolis. Fuaigh is an exciting new Gaelic theatre experience, promising a unique night at the theatre. Devised by an artistic team including celebrated singer and performer Gillebride McMillan, playwright and performer Rona MacDonald, visual artist and photographer Judith Parrott and director and writer John Binnie”.

Fuaigh is performed in Gaelic and English.

The audience are invited to join us at the fire towards the end of the play. They bring with them something they would like to save from the fire, or an acknowledgement of their family line.  A short clip can be viewed on this link at Vimeo

The funeral scene and the Paisley bard trying to burn his work were really emotional, but the warmth that shone brightly through the entire event, the brilliant mixing of your singers with an obviously enthusiastic and encaptured audience during the dancing etc. really made Fuaigh what I guess it actually means. The lovely photography and inspired use of the beautifully smooth stones. The dram at the ceilidh. We really did feel as though we were from South Uist ourselves! You made a big impression on us all which I am sure will live in our memories. You also attracted a very large and one of the most diverse audiences that we have been in and left us all with some Gaelic.

Fuaigh

Fuaigh was performed for the first time on Saturday, in St Peter’s Hall, Daliburgh, South Uist. Next stop Tramway, Glasgow 10 October, then Barra on 15 October.

Fuaigh is being shown by National Theatre Scotland as part of its Home Away Festival, alongside a week of performances from Chicago, New Delhi, Brisbane, Dundee, Tomintoul and Glenlivet, Glasgow, Jamaica, the World Wide Web and Rio de Janeiro.

“Fuaigh centres around a traditional Gaelic Ceilidh. Using evocative song and dance, combined with striking visuals and a compelling narrative, the show will explore what happens when you leave behind your homeland and sail away to the metropolis. Fuaigh is an exciting new Gaelic theatre experience, promising a unique night at the theatre. Devised by an artistic team including celebrated singer and musician Gillebride McMillan, playwright and poet Rona MacDonald, visual artist and photographer Judith Parrott and director and writer John Binnie”.

Fuaigh is performed in Gaelic and English.

Our show is presented in Glasgow directly after a Corroboree devised by my colleague Fred Leone of Brisbane. Fred is from the Garawa and Butchella Nations of Queensland.

Supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In association with British Council and in partnership with Glasgow Life. With funding from National Theatre Scotland, Creative Scotland, Bord na Gaidhlig, Traditional Arts Fund, Gaelic Books Council, and The Mod.

Meanwhile, Grounded is still touring with Flying Arts Alliance in Australia. Currently at Gympie Regional Gallery 23 August 2016 – 29 September 2016.

Putting up the first Fuaigh poster at Benbecula airport, on our arrival. Come and see our first performance in Daliburgh, South Uist on Saturday 1 October 7.30pm.
